Adhara is the 22nd brightest star in the sky and one of the 57 stars of celestial navigation. It is the fifth brightest star in the constellation Canis Major and is one of three stars that comprise the small triangle representing the hips of the dog.

The name Adhara derives from an ancient Arabian reference that describes it and its neighbours, the stars Aludra and Wesen, as the Maidens.

Adhara is 9000 times brighter than the sun, and is located approximately 680 lights years from Earth. Adhara is moving away from the sun at a rate of 16 miles per second.
